Harvest Moon by definition is when the Moon moves closest. This is usually around the time of harvesting in North America and with the dust collected by all the moving machinery, it makes the moon glow a beautiful orange, so amazing there aren't words to describe it.

The game however is much different to this natural phenomenon. You are given the task to bring a farm back to normal status usually in 3 years or something will happen. (With the exception of the newest games where you just farm) The gameplay consists of wooing a certain girl from the many townsfolk, marry her, have children, befriend villagers of traditional farm chores like collecting eggs, weeding, and harvesting produce.
